Jerónimo Martins already has a history of over two centuries. The first Jerónimo Martins store dates back to 1792, the year a young Galician arrived in Lisbon and opened a small store in the Chiado district of Lisbon.

How did the Group's internationalization process arise?

The internationalisation of the Jerónimo Martins Group arose naturally as a development of its Distribution business. Given the dimension of the domestic Food Distribution market and the administrative obstacles to the development of business in this field, the Group decided to expand into markets in which, in view of their dimension and potential for growth, the level of competition did not yet correspond to that of the mature markets in western Europe or the United States. The Group thus decided to expand into the Polish market in 1995. In 2011, the Group announced that its next step in internationalisation would be to enter the Colombian market.

In July 1989, an Initial Public Offering placed 15% of the share capital of Jerónimo Martins, SGPS, SA, on the stock market. Currently, approximately 40% of its capital is floated.

Pingo Doce is the largest and most modern chain of neighbourhood supermarkets in Portugal. Currently, the chain includes 399 stores in mainland Portugal and Madeira.

What is the positioning of Recheio?

Recheio is the banner of the Jerónimo Martins Group operating in the Wholesale Distribution market in Portugal and includes, as Private Labels, Masterchef, Gourmês and Amanhecer. This cash & carry chain, which employs around 1,900 people, aims to respond to the needs of small retailers and the Hotel Industry and currently has more than 40 stores in mainland Portugal and Madeira including food service platforms.

Amanhecer, apart from the fact that is it a Private Label at Recheio, is the new project aimed at supporting small, independent food shops that Recheio launched in 2011. It is a business partnership between Recheio and small and medium-sized food shops that believe that traditional commerce, if provided with modern management principles and competitive conditions of purchase, can be reborn and have a sustainable future.
